How Instant Money works

  • Register for Instant Money by dialling *120*212#, enter your ID number and create a unique Instant Money Wallet PIN.
  • Access your Instant Money Wallet through Internet Banking, Cellphone Banking, on the app or at our ATMs and retail partners, and load money into it.
  • You can also send cash to anyone with a cellphone number in South Africa or receive money in your wallet, which can be accessed at any time.
  • When the money is sent, the recipient will get a voucher number and PIN to collect the money at our ATMs or retail partners.

To send money at a retailer, give your ID and cellphone number at the till and confirm the amount you want to send. You’ll receive a voucher number and a 4-digit PIN to share with the person who’ll collect the money.

To receive money at a retailer, give the cashier the voucher number and key in the 4-digit PIN.

How much does sending Instant Money cost?
  • If you send from a retailer, it costs R9.95 and if you send from PEP, it costs R9.90.
  • If you use Internet Banking, Cellphone Banking, our app, or ATMs to send less than R500, it costs R8.50.
  • If you send between R501 and R1 000, it costs R11, and you’ll pay R13 for sending R1 001 or more.
Where can I withdraw or use Instant Money?

Standard Bank ATMs and our participating retailers: Spar, Rhino, Cambridge Food, Game, Boxer, Builders Warehouse, Makro, OK Furnitures, House & Home, Usave, PEP, Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Kazang and OTT mobile cash out points such as spaza shops.

Kindly note that some of the ATMs do not dispense R20 notes. You will be required to redeem cash at the participating retailers.

Where can I store/safekeep my Instant Money voucher?

Instant Money vouchers can be stored in an Instant Money Wallet by dialling *120*212#.

How do I send Instant Money?

You can send Instant Money from the Banking App, Cellphone Banking (*120*2345#), Internet Banking, Standard Bank ATMs, Instant Money Wallet (*120*212#), participating retailers and/or register for Bulk Payments.

How long is the Instant Money voucher valid for?

Instant Money vouchers are valid for 3 years.

What is the withdrawal limit?
You can withdraw up to R5 000 per day from a retailer or ATM (depending on the cash and note denomination availability) and up to R25 000 per month.
My recipient didn’t get their Instant Money voucher. What should I do?
  • You can call the Instant Money contact centre on 0860 466 639, select option 1 for self-service or option 2 to speak to a consultant.
  • Spar is the only retailer that can re-send the last active Instant Money voucher. You will be required to produce proof of ID.
Can I send Instant Money to another country?
Instant Money currently doesn’t allow cross-border payments.
Can I change a voucher PIN?
Yes, a voucher PIN can be reset by calling the Instant Money Team on 0860 466 639 or changing it within the channel it was sent from.
How do I reset the voucher PIN?

NB: PIN codes may not start with a zero (e.g. 0123), can’t be a sequence (e.g. 1234) or repeat a number one after the other (e.g. 1122).

  • You can reset the voucher PIN on your app, though Internet Banking or at an ATM under ‘Manage vouchers’.
  • The PIN for vouchers created at retailers can be reset by the sender by calling the Instant Money contact centre on 0860 466 639, selecting option 1 for self-service or option 2 to speak to a consultant.
  • The PIN code will automatically reset after 3 incorrect attempts and a new default PIN will go to the sender.
  • If the voucher is committed into the Instant Money Wallet, the PIN cannot be changed if there is a partial value remaining on the voucher.

How do I reset a PIN using Cellphone Banking?

  1. Dial *120*2345#, choose option 1 to log in and enter your 5-digit Cellphone Banking PIN.
  2. Select ‘Payments and transfers’ and click on ‘Instant Money’.
  3. Select ‘Change collection PIN’.
  4. A list of active vouchers will be displayed; select the one you wish to change the PIN for.
  5. Enter the new 4-digit cash collection PIN and confirm the change.

How to reverse an Instant Money Transfer?

You can cancel the voucher on the channel you used to send it.

If the voucher was sent from a retailer, you would need to take your ID and the slip (transaction reference) to the store to cancel the transaction. If the slip is lost, you may call the Instant Money call centre on 0860 466 639 to obtain transaction reference number.

Please note that the voucher send fee is non-refundable on all platform channels for cancellations.

Remember to enter the 4-digit cash collection PIN created for the voucher. If you have forgotten your PIN, you must change the PIN for the voucher you wish to cancel.

How do I cancel a voucher using Cellphone Banking?

  1. Dial *120*2345# and enter your 5-digit Cellphone Banking PIN.
  2. Select ‘Payments and transfers’ and then click on ‘Instant Money’.
  3. Select ‘Cancel a voucher’.
  4. A list of vouchers will be displayed.
  5. Select the voucher you want to cancel.
  6. Enter the 4-digit cash collection PIN and confirm the cancellation.

NB: Only vouchers of full value can be cancelled.

How do I cancel a voucher using the Banking App?

  1. Sign in to your app and select ‘Transact’.
  2. Select ‘Pay’ and click on ‘Instant Money’.
  3. Select ‘Manage vouchers’ and a list of active vouchers will be displayed.

How do I resend the voucher if the receiver didn’t get the SMS?
You can call the Instant Money Team on 0860 466 639. You can also resend the last active Instant Money voucher from a Spar, using your ID.
Does the Instant Money PIN expire?

It does not expire. However, if you enter the PIN three times incorrectly, it will be blocked. The sender will need to reset or change the PIN again. Alternatively, the sender can call the Instant Money call centre on 0860 466 639 and then select option 1 for self-service or option 2 to speak to a consultant.

 

Does the Instant Money voucher expire?
Yes, the Instant Money voucher number is valid for three years.
What do I do if my voucher or PIN is blocked?
Reset the PIN within the channel it was sent from or contact the Instant Money Team on 0860 466 639.
What do I need to send Instant Money?
Simply access our app, Internet Banking or Cellphone Banking, or any of our ATMs. If you’re sending from a retailer, you’ll require a South African ID.
Can foreign nationals receive Instant Money?

Yes, anyone with a South African cellphone number can receive Instant Money.

How many digits are the voucher numbers & PIN?

An Instant Money voucher has 10 numbers, and the PIN has 4 numbers.

What is Instant Money Wallet?

Instant Money Wallet is a facility that allows you to redeem, store and issue vouchers through the wallet platform. The wallet offers customers value-added services, such as buy airtime, data, and electricity.

What is the maximum amount I can have on my wallet?

A maximum of R25 000 p/m.

How can I change my Instant Money Wallet PIN?

Dial the USSD string *120*212#.

  • Enter your current PIN number.
  • Select ‘Manage Wallet’ (Option 6)
  • Select ‘Change Wallet PIN’ (Option 1)
  • Enter your new Instant Money Wallet PIN, re-enter the PIN as confirmation.

How do I make a deposit into my Instant Money Wallet?
By sending or receiving an Instant Money voucher to your cellphone number from any Standard Bank channel or participating retailer.
How do I redeem a voucher in my Instant Money Wallet?
  1. Select ‘Manage voucher’.  
  2. Click on ‘Top up with Instant Money voucher’.
  3. Select the voucher to be redeemed and enter the PIN for it.
How do I withdraw Instant Money as cash?
  1. Visit a Standard Bank ATM or a participating retailer.
  2. Select ‘Withdraw money’ and enter the amount.
  3. Enter your chosen 4-digit voucher PIN which creates an Instant Money voucher which you’ll receive by SMS.
  4. Select the voucher to be redeemed, enter the PIN for it and collect the cash.
Can I change a cellphone number after creating a voucher?

The sender cellphone number can be changed if the sender contacts the Instant Money call centre (0860 466 639) and answers the security questions. The recipient cell number cannot be changed. Alternatively, you can cancel the voucher and resend to a correct number, however, the fee will be forfeited.

Only vouchers sent from the retail stores can have the sender’s cell phone number changed.

If an ATM failed to dispense the cash, what do I do?

You can visit the nearest branch or contact the Instant Money call centre (0860 466 639) to investigate.

If the retailer is unable to assist me with the redemption, what must I do?

You can contact the Instant Money call centre on 0860 466 639 for assistance.

How do I send money from my Instant Money Wallet?
  1. Use any of our banking platforms or visit a participating retailer.
  2. Select ‘Send money’ and enter the amount.
  3. You’ll be prompted to enter the recipient’s cellphone number and the amount you’d like to send, as well as the voucher PIN for collection.
What are the costs for using my Instant Money Wallet?
  • There are no monthly fees or registration fees.
  • Sending from one Instant Money Wallet to another Instant Money Wallet: Free
  • Creating an Instant Money voucher on Instant Money Wallet: R6
  • Redeeming Instant Money: Free
  • Buying airtime, data or electricity: Free
What are the daily and monthly limits for using Instant Money Wallet?
You can send and spend up to R5 000 per day or up to R25 000 per month.
What happens to my Instant Money Wallet if my cellphone is lost or stolen or if my number changes?
Contact the Instant Money Team on 0860 466 639 to update your wallet to your new cellphone number. Funds in your Instant Money Wallet will still be available after a SIM swap.
What will happen to my Instant Money Wallet if I change to a different cellphone number?

You must contact the Instant Money contact centre on 0860 466 639 to update the wallet to the new cellphone number.

Can I send money to someone who doesn’t have a wallet?

Yes, by sending them an Instant Money voucher.

How do I send money from my Instant Money Wallet to someone who is registered for the wallet?

To send money to another cellphone number from your Instant Money Wallet you will:

  • Dial *120*2345#
  • Select ‘Send Money’ (Option 4)
  • You will then be prompted to enter your recipient’s cellphone number and the amount you would like to send
  • The funds will be credited to the wallet and can be withdrawn by the receiving wallet owner
Can I open a wallet for my children?

You cannot open a wallet for someone else. Anyone over the age of 16 years with a valid SA ID document/ Smart ID Card and a valid cellphone number can register for the wallet facility.
