Terms and conditions for PayShap
1. Introducing the terms
1.1 | These terms and conditions for PayShap (terms) form a legally binding agreement between you, the person using PayShap and us, The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited (registration number 1962/000738/06). |
1.2 | The terms become effective when you use PayShap. This means that you agree to the terms and warrant (promise) you can enter into a legally binding agreement. |
1.3 | You must know, understand and comply with the terms. The terms apply together with:

1.4 | If there is any conflict between the terms and any other terms mentioned above, the terms will apply to PayShap. |
1.5 | Pay special attention to the clauses in bold, as they may exclude or limit our liability (responsibility) to you or involve some risk for you. |
1.6 | You must make sure that PayShap is suitable for your needs. |
2. Definitions
The following words and expressions below have the meanings set out next to them unless the context clearly indicates a different meaning.
digital banking | As defined in the Standard Bank digital banking terms and conditions. |
expiry period | The number of days from when a PayShap Request is sent, until payment has to be made. The person or business making a PayShap Request can choose this period, up to a maximum of 45 days. |
OTP | One-time personal identification number. |
PayShap | A payment service that enables interbank real-time payments, using either a ShapID, Shap Name or bank account details. |
PayShap payment | Money paid to a person or a business using a ShapID (for a person), a Shap Name (for a business) or bank account details for a person or a business. |
PayShap Request | This allows you to request a PayShap payment to be made to you. |
ShapID | This is a simple name used to identify a person’s bank account for a PayShap payment to be made to them, and can be, for example, (your cellphone number)@standardbank. |
Shap Name | This is a simple name used to identify a business’ bank account for a PayShap payment to be made to them. |
3. About PayShap
3.1 | You can use PayShap to make or receive PayShap payments using digital banking. You can also send a PayShap Request to someone so that they can pay you. |
3.2 | To create a ShapID, use our digital banking and follow the prompts. By creating a ShapID, you confirm that the cellphone number you use for PayShap belongs to you. We are not responsible if you enter the wrong cellphone number, or if the cellphone number does not belong to you. |
3.3 | We may refuse to register the cellphone number that you choose to link to your ShapID, in our sole discretion. |
4. Making and receiving PayShap payment
4.1 | To make a PayShap payment:

4.2 | Once you make a PayShap payment, you cannot stop or take it back. |
4.3 | You cannot make a PayShap payment using a credit card, investment or loan account. This also means that you cannot link a ShapID or a Shap Name to any of these types of accounts. |
4.4 | We will charge you a non-refundable fee each time you make a PayShap payment. If you do not have enough money in your account to make the PayShap payment and pay the fee, we may not process the PayShap payment. |
4.5 | You can make a PayShap payment any time of the day or night, every day of the week, unless we let you know otherwise or if anything happens that could stop you from making a PayShap payment. |

6. PayShap for businesses
6.1 | Businesses can also use PayShap, and they will have to agree to different terms and conditions to make and receive PayShap payments. |
6.2 | Depending on the type of business, a business can use a ShapID to use PayShap, or a Shap Name can be allocated to them. They can also use their bank account details to receive PayShap payments. |
7. Limits that apply
7.1 | We will set a maximum limit for the amount of each PayShap payment that you can make or receive. The amount of each PayShap payment cannot exceed the maximum limit that we set. We may also limit the total number of PayShap payments that you make or receive. |
7.2 | When you send a PayShap Request, the bank of the person or business you request payment from may have limits for PayShap that mean you cannot receive the amount you requested. We are not responsible if you send a PayShap Request that cannot be completed because of another bank’s transaction limits. |
8. Fees and interest
You must pay us a fee when you use PayShap. All fees paid are non-refundable. You can see what you have to pay us in our pricing guide.
9. Limitation of our responsibility to you
9.1 | This clause applies in addition to what is set out in Standard Bank’s general terms and conditions and Standard Bank’s digital banking terms and conditions. |
9.2 | To the extent permitted by applicable laws, we are not responsible for any direct, indirect or consequential losses or claims arising from any technical or other problems (interruption, malfunction, downtime or other failures) which affect PayShap. |
10. PayShap payments by mistake
10.1 | If you make a PayShap payment by mistake, or you paid the wrong amount, we will try our best to help you get your money back. We cannot guarantee that you will get your money back. |
10.2 | If the person or business you paid by mistake doesn’t give us their permission to give you your money back, we cannot help you. Then you will have to contact the person you paid yourself. If you do not know who this person is, we can only tell you who it is if they give us permission to do so. We are not responsible if you cannot get your money back when you paid someone by mistake. |
10.3 | 10.3 We may, if we have to, communicate your personal details to third parties to process a PayShap payment or a PayShap Request. This will be done in line with Standard Bank’s privacy statement. If someone made a PayShap payment to you, you don’t know who made the payment and you want their details from us, we will only be able to give these details to you with their permission. |
11. Changes to the terms
11.1 | We may change the terms and introduce new terms and conditions and changes in the fees at any time. We will let you know about any changes by communicating them to you before you use PayShap. |
11.2 | The latest version of the terms applies to you every time you use PayShap. By using PayShap, you agree to the updated terms. |
11.3 | If we make changes to the terms, it does not mean that the terms are cancelled. You cannot change any of the terms. |
12. Cancelling your use of PayShap
12.1 | You may stop using PayShap at any time. To stop you from receiving PayShap payments using your ShapID, you will have to deregister your ShapID. A business will have to deregister its ShapID and its Shap Name. You can find out how to do this by using digital banking, or by contacting us using the details in clause 15. If someone has your bank account details, they can still make a PayShap payment into your account. |
12.2 | We may end our relationship with you and stop you from using PayShap, for example if:

12.3 | Depending on the reason for ending our relationship, we will do our best to provide you with notice of our intention to end it. |
12.4 | All the other terms for ending our relationship, which are set out in Standard Bank’s general terms and conditions and Standard Bank’s digital banking terms and conditions, will apply. |
13. Personal information and privacy
13.1 | We understand that your personal information is important to you. By using PayShap, you acknowledge that your personal information will be processed by us and (if necessary) by third parties according to the Standard Bank privacy statement, which is in line with the relevant applicable laws. |
13.2 | It is your responsibility to read and understand the contents of Standard Bank’s privacy statement. |
13.3 | We will maintain the confidentiality of your personal information and we will implement safeguards to secure your personal information as set out in Standard Bank’s privacy statement. |
13.4 | Standard Bank’s privacy statement includes a description of what personal information is, what information we process, how we process your information, where we collect your information, whom we share your information with and your rights as a data subject. It also includes the complaints contact details of both Standard Bank and the South African Information Regulator, which is, among other things, empowered to monitor and enforce compliance with applicable laws relating to personal information. |
14. Legal protections we have to tell you about
14.1 | The Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act and the consumer protections it provides do not apply to the terms. |
14.2 | PayShap payments are not protected by the Corporation for Deposit Insurance. You can find out more about this on the CODI website. |
